What Psalms teaches us about God

As we strive to grow in our faith in Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father, it’s important that we understand who God is. It was Pharoah in (Exodus 5:2) who said to Moses and Aaron, “Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and besides, I will not let Israel go.” Pharoah didn’t know God and refused to obey Him.

It’s important that we know who God is and obey Him! We need a good understanding of His attributes. As we grow in our knowledge of who God is, our faith should continue to grow. The Psalms reveal to us a great deal about God and His attributes. Let’s consider some of them.

· God is Good: “O taste and see that the LORD is good: How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” (Psalm 34:8)

· God is Sovereign: “The earth is the LORD’s, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.” (Psalm 24:1-2)

· God is Wrathful: “He who sits in the heavens laughs, the LORD scoffs at them. Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury, saying, ‘But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.” (Psalm 2:4-6)

· God is Everlasting: “Before the mountains were born or you gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” (Psalm 90:2)

· God is Omnipresent: “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will lay hold of me.” (Psalm 139:7-10)

· God is Merciful: “All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep His covenant and his testimonies.” (Psalm 25:10)

· God is Omniscient and Infinite: “He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them. Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.” (Psalm 147:4-5)

· God is Compassionate: “The LORD supports the afflicted…” (Psalm 147:6)

· God is Forgiving: “How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit.” (Psalm 32:1-2)

· God is Gracious: “The LORD is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.” (Psalm 145:8)

· God is Transcendent and Unmeasurable: “Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.” (Psalm 145:3)

· God is Holy: “Yet you are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22:3)

·  God is Faithful: “Your lovingkindness, O LORD, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.” (Psalm 36:5)

·  God is Righteous and Judge: “Your righteousness is like the mountains of God! Your judgments are like a great deep. O LORD, You preserve man and beast. (Psalm 36:6).

·  God is Love: “How precious is your lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” (Psalm 36:7)

Meditate on who God is to strengthen your faith.
