A Verse to Remember

Last Sunday morning, I preached from 2 Timothy 2:1-13. I talked about how Paul’s final letter to Timothy was a letter of faith. Paul wanted Timothy to remain faithful to the Lord, His work, and the brethren. One of the ways Timothy could remain faithful to the Lord would be through remembering the resurrection of Jesus, 2 Timothy 2:8. Paul wrote, “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel.” Before the start of evening service, a brother shared with me some additional thoughts he had written down about this verse. I loved them. I would like to share them with you. These points, I believe, help us to see how 2 Timothy 2:8 is a great verse to remember, so we can continue to remain faithful to our king in heaven.

Person: Jesus Christ As we go through life, we always need to remember Jesus. Jesus should always be the driving force in everything we do. He came and lived a sinless life. He died on the cross for our sins. Never forget what He’s done.

Power: Risen from the dead As we think about Jesus, remember His resurrection. Everything hinges on the resurrection. If Christ is not raised, then our faith is vain, 1 Corinthians 15:14. Because of the resurrection, we have hope.

Never forget what He’s done.

Prophecy: Descendant of David In Matthew 1:1, we learn that Jesus was of the lineage of David. It says, “The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” I think this part of the passage reminds us of the faithfulness of God. God is faithful, 2 Timothy 2:13. What He says, He will do. He always does. We never have to worry about doubting what God says He will do. Remember what Peter said in Acts 2:29- 32. “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and the tomb is with us to this day. And so, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne, he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh suffer decay. This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.” Was God faithful? Yes!

Preaching: According to my gospel Paul preached Jesus Christ. He preached how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy and rose from the grave. This is the good news Paul preached. This is the good news we must continue to share with others. I appreciate my brother sharing these thoughts with me. This will preach. But it should also motivate us to be even more faithful to the Lord. 2 Timothy 2:8, is a verse for us to remember as we strive to grow in our faithfulness to Jesus. This would be a great verse for us to memorize. Be sure to remember it!
