The secret to successful evangelism

In my 13 years of full-time preaching, I’ve had a lot of discussions regarding evangelism. Some want to know what’s the best Bible passage to use on a certain subject. Others want to know what the best workbook may be to use. Here’s the truth. There is no secret ingredient to successful evangelism. As we think about going and making disciples for Jesus, there are a few thoughts to consider.

There is great joy in sowing and reaping. In John 4:34-38 Jesus said, “My food is to the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. Let us be sowers and reapers! God will give the increase.

We are not to be afraid. Jesus told Paul not to be afraid when he was in Corinth. “And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, ‘Do not be afraid any longer…” Acts 18:9

We must continue to speak! “…But go on speaking and do not be silent…” Acts 18:10

Jesus is with us. He was with Paul in his journeys. He is with us! “…And no man will attack you in order to harm you, for I have many people in this city.” Acts 18:10

We are to pray for open doors. “Devote yourself to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving; praying at the same time for us as well, that God will open up to us a door for the word, so that we may speak forth the mystery of Christ, for which I have also been imprisoned.” Paul cared enough for lost people that he went to God in prayer for opportunities. This is the mindset we must have.

There is no secret when it comes to saving souls! What’s required is faith in God. What’s required is knowing the gospel has the power to save souls. What’s required is confidence in our Savior, shining our lights, and capitalizing on opportunities in front of us.
