When the Lord’s church was established on the Day of Pentecost, we see the unity and love of God’s people. “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” Acts 2:42-47
First century Christians loved God very much! They were not merely curious or interested in His word, but rather devoted to the apostles’ teaching. They loved God by worshiping Him. They loved God by submitting to the authority of the apostles’ teaching.
And they loved one another!
1. They were generous and willing to share with other Christians. No doubt this kind of generosity had a ripple effect. People in the community saw it. Other brethren saw it. Most importantly, God saw it was pleased.
2. They spent a great deal of time with one another. They opened their homes and practiced hospitality. Spending time with one another would certainly have helped them to understand the needs of their brethren. While they worshipped together, there were other occasions where they spent time together. There was joy and gladness among them They had reason to rejoice because of the common salvation they shared.
Love is at the root of Christianity. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but eternal life.” John 3:16.
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.” John 15:12-13
As we think about moving into the New Year, let us continue to love one another! “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” Romans 12:9
