Last week I was in Mauriceville Texas. The church that meets in Mauriceville had their Vacation Bible School. Their theme was “Honoring My Family.” I preached 6 lessons from Sunday-Thursday. My sermons (Worth More Than Gold, I Must Love My Parents, I Must Love My Siblings, I Must Work Diligently, I Must Bring Joy to my Family, I Must Serve God Faithfully) were for the high school students and adults. Each night there was a tremendous turnout. The congregation no longer holds gospel meetings, so their VBS is a big event. It was such a blessing to see so many familiar faces.
It’s been about four years since I’ve been back in the Beaumont area. As I drove back to where we spent almost nine years, I had a lot of different emotions. I’ve known many of the Christians at the Mauriceville Congregation. It was a blessing to see them and to be encouraged by them. I had the opportunity to spend time with about 20 brethren from the Dowlen Road church as well. What a blessing to hug and spend time with those brethren. As I reflect on the past week, I am reminded how it is a blessing to be a Christian. We like to teach our children to count their many blessings. As we get older, we need to do the same.
Why is it a blessing to be a Christian? Let’s count them one by one!
1. Because we are saved from our sins, (Acts 2:38; Ephesians 1:7).
2. Because heaven will be our home one day, (John 14:1-6).
3. Because we have a spiritual family which loves us and encourage us (Acts 2:47; Acts 20:36-38).
4. Because even when travelling, we can gather with other saints to worship God (Acts 20:1-7).
5. Because when we sin, we can confess our sins to God, repent, and be forgiven, (1 John 1:8-10).
6. Because we don’t have to fear death, (John 11:21-26).
7. Because through Christ we have victory over the evil one, (1 John 3:7-8).
Count your blessings. Name them one by one. Remember what the Lord has done!
