“For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything…” 1 Thessalonians 1:7
Is Evangelism for me? YES! It’s for every Christian. These verses are filled with encouragement and a reminder of a worthy endeavor every Christian can engage in daily. Last week in our Bible class in the auditorium, we had a fantastic discussion about reaching the lost as we wrapped up the book of Acts. The book of Acts reminds us of the power of the gospel of Christ. We saw the growth of the church and how Christians lived in simple ways and did simple things for one another and for those in the world. The result was thousands of souls saved from their sins.
The gospel of Jesus Christ was preached! The resurrection of Jesus was a topic which was constantly shared and for good reason! Because of the resurrection of Jesus there is so much to hope for and to rejoice over! People were given opportunities to hear the wonderful story of Jesus.
For some, it was a 1:1 setting like Eunuch and Philip the Evangelist in Acts 8. For others, it was in a group setting like Lydia and the women at the Riverside who heard Paul and Silas share the good news, Acts 16. There were impromptu opportunities brethren capitalized on like Paul while he was in Athens, Acts 17. Even when suffering and disappointment hit Christians like a tidal wave, they had strength and courage to share when opportunities presented themselves (Read Acts 8:1-4).
Evangelism wasn’t for a select few in the church, but rather everyone! It is true Jesus sent out the apostles to go and preach the gospel to all creation, Mark 16:15-16. They did just that and accomplished much. Yet there were others like Philip, the saints scattered in Jerusalem, and the Thessalonians that also shared. Shining our lights, praying for doors of opportunities to be open, engaging in good deeds, and speaking about our glorious King and Savior Jesus is for every Christian.
