Today

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus spoke frequently about what should be done “Today.” It is quite easy to procrastinate on the most important matters. As we think about our spiritual walk with Christ, we should take to heart what Jesus stressed regarding “Today.” Consider the following passages.

“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

“Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.” Matthew 5:24

“Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11

“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:31-34

What needs to be done Today?

·      We need to shine our lights every day!

·      If necessary, reconciliation with a brother or sister in Christ.

·      Daily prayers to God for what we need.

·      Focusing on the day we have been given without worrying about tomorrow. This doesn’t mean we don’t think about tomorrow. But rather, we are not anxious and filled with worry with what tomorrow may bring.

When we think about the Beatitudes, could we not say those need to be done daily? Being poor in spirt is not an occasionally disposition. Rather, it’s who we are supposed to be all the time. Hungering and thirsting after God’s righteousness is not limited to Sundays. Rather, it’s a desire that should be backed up with action daily. What is it that you need to do today? Don’t delay!
