Stay Calm

In our Bible reading from last week, we read from (Psalm 131). King David wrote, “O LORD, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; nor do I involve myself in great matters, or in things too difficult for me. Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child rests against his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me. O Israel, hope in the LORD from this forth and forever.” We can find great comfort in this Psalm. King David spoke about the calmness he had in his soul. The NLT says, “Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself…”

David trusted in the LORD. His hope was found in God. He understood the necessity of avoiding pride and walking in a humble manner. It seems that David understood what he could and could not do. His focus was not on selfish ambitions, but rather on God intentions. David was calm, content, and confident in God!  Can we say the same?

We’ve read most of the Psalms this year. Looking back at what we’ve read, we can learn a great deal of how we can stay calm, content, and confident in God.

·      Consider (Psalm 1:1-3): Our soul can be calm when we choose to follow God’s instructions. God’s instructions are for our well-being. Let us be content with what He has instructed us to do. Choosing not to listen to God’s word will cause chaos. Those who are full of pride will never experience true calm and contentment.

·      Consider (Psalm 23): The Shepherd Psalm reminds us of who is leading us. When God is in control of our lives, we will have calm. It doesn’t mean we will have storms, but rather we can have a quiet confidence no matter what we face. That’s because He will lead us through the valley of the shadow of death. Those who are not led by the Shepherd will never experience the still waters.

·      Consider (Psalm 22): This Psalm which points to the intense suffering of Jesus is a reminder of what Jesus has accomplished. As we consider the cross and sacrifice of Jesus, this will help to calm our souls. The fact that Jesus endured even death on a cross, means that we will be able to endure anything.

·      Consider (Psalm 32): David spoke about the heaviness of sin and the blessing of forgiveness. When we repent and confess our sins to God, we can be confident He will forgive us.

·      Consider (Psalm 110): When we consider Jesus is our great High Priest in heaven and that He makes intercession for us, this will give us a calm soul. He’s in control. He sees. He loves.

·      Consider (Psalm 119): When we consider how the word of God is to be lamp unto our fight, this is reason for us to be calm.

Is your soul calm? Is your soul content? Is your soul confident in the hope our Father provides for us? If your hope is in anything else, you will be disappointed. Maybe not today, but eventually. During this busy season of the year, meditate on the Psalms. Seek after Him. Submit to Him. Stay calm.
